THE MYSTERY OF MARRIAGE
Wednesday, August 8, 2018

John 14:1 – “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.” 5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Ephesians 5:31 (NKJV) – “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Jesus – “The Word” of the Holy Trinity – lived with the Father and Holy Spirit in eternity. They were His home. When the Word “became flesh” and left their manifest presence to “dwell among us” and become a vulnerable human being, He was acting as a bridegroom. His bride was the people He had created and loved – those who freely choose to love Him in return, just like we see here today.

Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV)
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

In Jewish wedding tradition, there’s a thing called “the bride price” or “dowry.” It’s the amount of wealth a young man was willing to pay to his bride’s family to marry their daughter. Back in Jesus day, a young man might give half of his land, half of his flocks, gold or silver to the family of the woman he loved as a way to prove his love and his willingness to “lay down his life” for her.

And get this: this young man did this knowing that the girl he fancied had every right to turn him down flat. She could not only reject that young man, but keep his wealth.

In short, she has free will to say yes or no. She can reject him and her family gets to keep the gifts – or the sacrifice – he paid.

This is a picture of Jesus and His sacrifice…..
